Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)?
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is designed to prepare experts in nursing practice. It is the pinnacle of practice-focused nursing degrees, building upon master’s programs by providing an educational foundation in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and systems leadership, among others. To receive a DNP a person must have a Master's Degree and be an active APRN.
What is a Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner (APRN)?
An advanced practice registered nurse is a nurse with post-graduate education in nursing. APRNs are prepared with advanced didactic and clinical education, knowledge, skills, and scope of practice in nursing. In the state of Nebraska an APRN can practice as an independent provider after 2000 clinical hours of practice are completed.
What's the difference between a Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant?
A nurse practitioner, or NP, is a registered nurse who is trained to provide various health care services and, depending on state regulations, may be able to see patients and practice medicine in the same way that a doctor of medicine (MD) can. A physician assistant, or PA, is a health care professional who can practice medicine but only under the supervision of a physician.
What's the difference between a MD and DO?
The simple answer is that both an MD (Doctor of Medicine) and a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) are doctors licensed to practice in the United States. They are similarly educated and certified, but there are differences in their training and philosophy of patient care.
